Meet the First Woman to Become A Pilot in Nigeria
In this essay, we will examine a trailblazer whose perseverance and passion smashed the norms in Nigeria's aviation industry: Chinyere Kalu, Nigeria's first commercial pilot. These days, it is hard to find a field where women are not doing incredible things.
Chinyere is a native of Akwete, Ukwa East Local Government Area (LGA), in Abia state. After her parents divorced, she was mostly in her mother's custody. She attended the Lagos Anglican Girls Grammar School in Surulere, Lagos, for her secondary education after completing her elementary education at the Anglican Girls Grammar School in Yaba. She had originally intended to work as an air hostess, but she changed her mind and chose to become a pilot instead.
Her aunt, the matriarch of the family, in particular, supported her desire to pursue a career in aviation. She trained as a private and commercial pilot at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria, Kaduna, where she encountered several difficulties. Given that the aviation industry is notorious for being controlled by men, she had to contend with self-doubt, particularly because her male coworkers occasionally purposefully made things difficult for women. Aside from this, though, she had to deal with the ongoing stress of being fired because, at aviation school, dismissal letters were given out on Fridays in an effort to screen out applicants, but she persevered. She completed additional aviation courses in the US and the UK in addition to her training at the aviation college, Zaria.
